The SAERA 2014 Conference will take place at Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel,Durban from Wednesday, 13 August 2014 to Friday, 15 August 2014. The pre-conference workshops for research development will take place on Tuesday, 12 August 2014.
Conference theme: Researching Education: Future Directions
The theme explores the current state of education research in South Africa, and looks forward to the future directions that research may take. Much education research in the past two decades has focused on a range of education policies and the implementation of these policies. Research has tended to be small scale, and qualitative in nature, although we have seen an increasing emphasis on the analysis of large achievement studies in schooling. We envisage that the conference would provide a space to reflect on the nature, the purpose and the role of education research at present, and to look forward to new theoretical and methodological directions in the field. The conference will engage with all contexts of research – Higher Education, Further Education and Training, informal education, adult education, as well as schooling.
The conference organisers call for papers/ posters / panel discussions that address one or more of the following themes:
The nature and purpose of education research
The nature and purpose of education as a field and what does this mean for research?
Continuities/ disruptions/ stasis in education research
Comparative education research
The relationship between research and policy
The current and future role of education research in South Africa.
Theoretical, conceptual and methodological issues
Theoretical and conceptual frameworks that inform researching education
Methodological issues that inform researching education
Researching education in South Africa
Empirical studies and how these build knowledge in the field (empirical studies should show clearly how they build on, and extend what we already know in the field)
New directions for education research in SA
The programme will include presentation of papers (20 mins) followed by 10 min discussion; poster presentations; panel discussions on a particular theme (90 mins). Panel discussions would comprise 3 or more presenters who all focus on the same theme. Delegates are also invited to submit a photograph in which they interpret the theme of the conference. These will be displayed at the conference. Details for the submission of photographs will be place on the conference website at a later date.
